Dinner reservations in YNP?

My husband and I will be spending 4 nights in YNP, staying in a cabin at Canyon, beginning June 10th. I%26#39;m wondering if it%26#39;s worthwhile and/or advisable to make reservations ahead of our trip for dinner at one or more of the lodges in the park?

If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great. How%26#39;s the food? Are there options for a couple of semi-vegetarians (no beef or pork)? Is the ambiance in one of the restaurants particularly nice? How much should we expect to pay for dinner?

Any advice is appreciated.

Reservations are a must for dinner in the dining rooms at Old Faithful Inn, Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Lake Hotel. It%26#39;s a national park open seasonally, so don%26#39;t expect Wolfgang Puck. However, the food is usually good. Service can be spotty but generally is good as well.

Dinner reservations in YNP?

From what I%26#39;ve read (someone please correct me if I%26#39;m wrong), only three of the restaurants in the park take reservations. Old Faithful Inn dining room, Lake Yellowstone Hotel dining room, and a dining room at the Grant Village hotel.

I%26#39;ve only ever eaten at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel dining room, but I was only 17 at the time and don%26#39;t really remember it other than I thought it was good, LOL! It seems to get the highest marks out of the three, at least on Tripadvisor. They have the menu on-line; I%26#39;d link it but my computer won%26#39;t do links for some reason! You can find it by going to the Xanterra website (travelyellowstone.com), and going to the dining link. They have the menus for all the sit-down restaurants in the park (not the cafeterias, though).

kren is correct about the reservations. During the summer season, Snow Lodge doesn%26#39;t take dinner reservations, but you will need them at the other 3 places.

I haven%26#39;t eaten dinner at Grant Village, but if you%26#39;re looking for ambiance I would highly recommend OFI and/or the Lake Hotel dining rooms.

One thing is you should take into account is the drive back to Canyon. I wouldn%26#39;t suggest doing that after dark. The wildlife is more active then and can be a real hazard in places. The Lake area is closer and would be a better option for that reason. The dining room there overlooks the Lake - and there is a lovely lobby where they usually have a pianist or string group playing before dinner.

You could still visit OFI%26#39;s dining room when you go to Old Faithful - perhaps for lunch. If not, at least for a look around.

I don%26#39;t know about June, but I made reservations for dinner in mid August at OFI and they acted like they were starting to fill up the dinner reservations anyway

Didn%26#39;t mean to pass along incorrect info. I think when we stayed at Snow Lodge3-4 yrs ago we made reservations for dinner, but I could be wrong.

Where can I get discounts to rent a car for 2 weeks or 2 one-week from JAC for a reasonable price? I need to rent a regular any size car for the first week and then a minivan the second week or the same care for the entire 2 week-period is ok too.

Do you know if Costco offer car rental w/ JAC airport? I also AAA membership. If know of any discount codes, I%26#39;d appreciate it very much. I need to rent from June 18-July 4. Thank you very much for your help.

If you are a Mastercard holder then check out priceless.com website for travel deals and go directly to AAA website.

Rentals are VERY expensive at Jackson airport. We booked a very long time ago for our July trip and lucked out with a very good rate. Shortly after we booked, rates skyrocketed.

You might consider Dollar Rental Car, which is off-site of the airport. It requires taking a shuttle from the airport into town, but I had booked a car through them just so I had something reasonable until the rates dropped at an airport location. Luckily they did, and I got a car through Alamo. I check periodically, and I haven%26#39;t seen any substantial rate drop in the past few months. If anything, rates have gone up. For additional discounts, try getting a hold of an Entertainment book. They have coupons and some discounted rates.

Best Location to Photograph Sunset

Is there a location that%26#39;s especially good to photograph the Tetons at sunset. Never been there and trying to plan out our day.

Anyplace in the park is good for sunset. It%26#39;s such a beautiful place.

That said, Oxbow Bend and the Snake River Overlook tend to be the most famous spots for sunset.

Grand Teton NP - 1 day tour - Need all your suggestions

Hello GTNP Experts,

As part of a hurriedly made program over the Memorial Day weekend, we plan to spend 1 day in GTNP. We shall be arriving around 11am via the Moran entrance. Based on the various posts in this forum, this is what I plan to cover in a day :-

a) Drive upto Jackson Lake via the Oxbow bend and then upto Colter Bay Village. Lunch enroute.

B)Take the Teton Park Road on our return journey --%26gt; Signal Mountain %26amp; Signal Mountain Trail Road --%26gt; Jenny Lake Scenic Drive --%26gt; Boat Ride and then hike upto Hidden Falls --%26gt; view the sunset from some vantage point and return to Jackson for the night.

I had the following questions in this regard :-

1) How long is the Jenny Lake trail from the point where we get off the boat upto Hidden Falls ? We have small kids (age 6 yrs) in our team -- so just wanted your advice if the hike can be done. Please let us know till what time in the evening does the boat operate.

2) Could you suggest any particular sunset view point? Approx what time do we have the sunset nowadays?

3) Similarly what would be the best possible point closest to Jackson ( since we have the night halt at Jackson) to view the sunrise on the following morning?

4)Please let me know where is the Dorman%26#39;s viewpoint and the Ansel Adams Famous Photo Point. Are these spectacular points which should not be missed? Or can we accomodate these within my itenary?

5) Any other must see spots that I might be missing.

Please note that we plan to drive along GTNP upto YNP on the following day. Any tips/advice will be gratefully accepted.

Your plans for the day sound perfect.

The boat operates until 4 PM in May. It%26#39;s only a half mile from the trailhead to Hidden Falls, but steep. You may want to consider making this your first actiivty of the day, and putting the rest on top of it.

Adams famous shot was the Snake River Overlook, on 26 heading north from Jackson.

Your trip sounds good for the day. The key thing is to drive from Jackson Lake Junction south to Jenny Lake. That%26#39;s the big ';jaw dropper'; in terms of the in the car experience.

You may want to pull over at Colter Bay and walk the marina for a bit on the way to Yellowstone, maybe grab breakfast or lunch at the eatery there. There%26#39;s a nice lakeshore trail with great views.

I%26#39;m spending 3 nights in Yellowstone at the end of June and I could really use some camping advice. My girlfriend and I really enjoy camping, but we don%26#39;t do the shoulder-to-shoulder state campground bit very well. We%26#39;re also not backpackers. Instead, we prefer a slightly isolated spot where there%26#39;s not a lot of other campers. Something that might take a little 4 wheeling to find, for instance. Any tips?

Best off-the-beaten-path car camping?

There are a number of campgrounds in Yellowstone park that are first come/first served. You may want to book the first night at Canyon CG, then get up early to get a spot at one of these. Keep in mind that YS is a busy place and even if you want to be secluded, you may not be able to. nps.gov/yell/…camping-in-yellowstone.htm

Thanks for the tips - the post you referred to is exactly what I%26#39;m looking for.

For what it%26#39;s worth, I%26#39;ll also be spending several nights at my family cabin which is near the sinks and Lander. That area is also stunning, remote and well worth the drive for folks who are in that part of the state.

If isolated camping is what you are looking for, check out the national forests in the area. They have a lot of nonreservable little campgrounds, and I have heard you may have them to yourselves. But if seeing the park is more what you are after, you make have to just make do with the park campgrounds, otherwise you risk spend a couple of hours extra in the car everyday. We camped at Canyon last August. This is a huge campground, but wooded and a little hilly. It is organized into smaller loops, so we never felt as if we were camping with a few hundred neighbors. The village is very busy, but the campground feels worlds away. Our family normally car camps at secret little backwoods locals, but to see the park, staying as close as possible is worth it.

Thanks for the tips. I ended up taking CasaAzul%26#39;s advice and booked 1 night at Canyon. I%26#39;ll get up early and grab a spot at Slough Creek the next morning. With only 29 spots it should be a little quieter than a ~250 site campground!

You are in a tricky spot. The parks themselves don%26#39;t really have a ';remote'; drive-in car camping experience inside park boundaries. But there are variations of the theme.

Slough is a great campground, but is actually fairly busy because people just like to drive the road and turn around. It is on a gravel road though which cuts down traffic. Another option is Pebble Creek campground:

This is just about up in the Beartooths, with a different look. Lots of driving though to other locations. I would also consider Lewis Lake pretty darn remote in terms of ';in the park Yellowstone:

Not many people go there because it%26#39;s so far south in the park. The lake is awesome.

Yellowstone is different from Glacier in that Glacier does have remote, gravel road drive in parking.

Make sure you get up to Slough Creek before 10 AM if you want a spot that time of year. If you get bounced, try out Pebble Creek. It%26#39;s a beauty.

Rodeo & Restaurants

We%26#39;re spending Saturday June 13th in Cody on our way to Yellowstone. Planning to go to the rodeo. Do we need to get tickets before we go?

Also, what%26#39;s the best place in town for dinner? Breakfast?

You can get rodeo tickets the day of the rodeo as none of the seats are reserved. If you%26#39;re staying at a hotel or campground you can probably buy them at the front desk. If not you can buy them right when you go to the rodeo. There is also a shuttle bus that runs through town before and after the rodeo if you don%26#39;t want to hassle with driving to the rodeo grounds.

We%26#39;ve always eaten in our 5th wheel so can%26#39;t help you with the recommendations for meals.

For breakfast try the little place across from the Cody Cowboy Village or the restaurant next to the Best Western and for dinner the Wyoming Chop and Steak house in downtown Cody is great. We were there last June.

We are booked at Canyon Lodge for July 4/5/6. Family of 3-Then depart to Cody on the 6th-stay 1 night- then back to Jackson where we fly out. What is the route to take from Cody to Jackson? Do you have to go back thru YNP or is there an alternate?? Thanks for any help/advise-Susan
