We%26#39;ll be leaving YNP after 4 days mid July en route to Cody and considered leaving from the northeast entrance in order to take the scenic beartooth highway then catch the chief joseph to cody.First time to the area-is this do-able?? or would it just be better to take the east entrance straight out to Cody? Any advise appreciated!
scenic beartooth highway/chief joseph to cody?definitely doable %26amp; recommended. if you are coming back into the park after cody, come back the opposite way you go. i%26#39;ve done it both ways %26amp; it%26#39;s a great drive. cooke city is kind of a neat little town that you would go thru from the ne entrance. be sure to visit the ore house saloon %26amp; maybe have lunch in town. i%26#39;m sure you know the cody rodeo is a must. i also like the sierra trading post outlet in cody %26amp; if you have the time the buffalo bill museum is worth it.
scenic beartooth highway/chief joseph to cody?yes we are going back thru the park after cody to jax hole %26amp; that was my thought to take a different route. Already got tickets to rodeo, plan on museum, thanks for the advise on cooke city.
As you go out the Beartooth and get to the turn for the Chief Joseph, don%26#39;t turn. Stay on the Beartooth for another 30 or so miles to the Rock Creek Vista, then turn around and backtrack to the Chief Joseph and take that to Cody. This extra 60 miles of driving takes you over the most spectacular part of the Beartooth. This is the part that people drive to see. Backtracking is not all bad either as you will see different things going the opposite way.
Thanks-you answered my next question before i had a chance to post it! Dont mind the extra mileage-wanna see as much as we possibly can!
just noticed you%26#39;re from pelham. i%26#39;m from ft. payne.
i thought about one more option but not sure what your itinerary is. last year we left gardiner %26amp; headed east out the ne entrance, thru cooke city, across the beartooth pass into red lodge (a great town), %26amp; then south from there to cody. we came back thru the east entrance %26amp; stayed at lake yellowstone hotel.
we had originally planned to retrace the route from red lodge back to chief joseph %26amp; then head to cody but the beartooth pass can wear you out with all the twists %26amp; turns, so that%26#39;s why we headed south instead. it%26#39;s worth going part of the way on the beartooth pass for sure like the earlier poster reccomends.
Thanks for that info-have some friends in ft.payne-nice area.If we did as the earlier poster says and go past chief joseph to the vista, will we be in red lodge or is that further on?
no, you%26#39;ll probably be a little over 1/3 of the way to red lodge when you get to the pass. we stopped at the top, took some pics, %26amp; walked around the snowfields last july.
it%26#39;s only 60+ miles from cooke city to red lodge but because the beartooth pass is made up of many hairpin turns %26amp; switchbacks it can take a while. the driver has to pay so much attention to driving that you don%26#39;t get to look as much as you want to %26amp; it seemed to take forever. again, it%26#39;s beautiful but i just didn%26#39;t want to backtrack after we got to red lodge.
you probably already have your plans made but a night in red lodge is fun %26amp; then a drive down to cody for the day is great too. that%26#39;s what we did %26amp; maybe you can do the same on your next trip.
for the last 7 years we%26#39;ve been flying into glacier np, spending 3-4 days there %26amp; then driving down to ynp area for 3-4 days, finishing in jackson for a day or two. i highly recommend glacier np if you%26#39;ve never been there. it may be more beautiful than ynp in some ways.
hit a wrong key in my last reply to you. you%26#39;ll be over 2/3 way to red lodge once you get to the pass, not 1/3.
Yeah i guess we will have to do red lodge on another trip-already have reservation in cody before heading back to jackson. I really appreciate all the good advise i get on t.a. Sure makes the trip planning easier. Glacier sounds like it might be our next trip!
