Hi all
We%26#39;ve a month long trip planned from the UK in June 08 round Montana %26amp; Wyoming inc 3 nights in G. Tetons %26amp; 6 nights in Yellowstone, but have just found out about the above Pow Wow, the 49th Annual Indian Days Pow Wow on Fri, Sat %26amp; Sun 27, 28 %26amp; 29 June, at Fort Washakie, nr Lander WY.... and I think I%26#39;d really like to see, what reads to be, a truly wonderful spectacle. I can rearrange our itinerary, losing our last night in YNP, in favour of driving 200 miles south early Sunday AM to Fort Washakie in good time for The Grand Entry at 3pm. Then we%26#39;d stay in Lander /onight, heading up to Cody for remainer of our itinerary. Is this worth doing please?? %26amp; does anyone know what time the event finishes in the evening? So shud we lose 1 day in YNP in favour of seeing the Pow Wow? I see the route north from Lander to Cody will then be on the new Wind River Scenic Byway Hwy 20 from Shoshoni to Thermopolis. We%26#39;ve 2 nights in Cody but the Pow Wow there is the weekend before :( From Cody we head north up Chief Joseph, onto the Beartooth to Red Lodge, then Billings for 2 nights inc the 4th. Does anyone know of any Independance Day Celebrations happening in Billing please? Thanks in anticipation....
Annual Eastern Shoshone Indian Days Pow Wow June 2008 WY.Googled Billings, perhaps an answer here? http://billingscvb.visitmt.com/
I know nothing about the Pow Wow, but if interests you this much, with six nights in YNP, I%26#39;d let one go. Five is adequate. Bring binoculars.
Cody? Unsure from your text, but yes, it deserves at least three hours for the Museums.
Annual Eastern Shoshone Indian Days Pow Wow June 2008 WY.I haven%26#39;t been to the Shoshone Powwow but have been to some in New Mexico. They are really interesting - you%26#39;ll want to learn the etiquette rules since a powwow is quite different than many other events. Visit ehow.com/how_2075992_enjoy-native-american-p… for a briefing. Also, whenever you are on tribal lands you are no longer in the USA since each tribe is a sovereign country of its own. So be sure to follow the rules - like asking before taking photos of people. Be sure to shop the vendors, there will be Indian food and art that is the real thing.
Hello UK,
My children will be getting initated into the pow wow circle during the Eastern Shoshone days in Fort Washakie on Saturday afternoon before Grand Entry. The pow-wow will run late into the night. Once they start dancing and singing it is hard to stop the fun. I would recommend driving to Fort Washakie to witness a specatular event. I hope will be able to witness my children%26#39;s sacred initiation.
I hope you enjoy what will be a magical day with your family. We did attend the Fort Washakie Pow Won in June 2008 - stayed in Lander overnight and drove the 15 or so miles from there. It was a wonderful afternoon %26amp; evening - stayed till about 10pm and it was still going strong then! Managed to find a spot in the shade - courtesy of a lovely Indian family who had several children and adults dancing in the competitions. It was a truly spectacular sight, the regalia was beautiful and very colourful and the sacred drums really became our heartbeats. Although we had no idea of the significance of each of the dances, we soon became quite expert at picking out those dancers we thought would go thro to the next round and pre-selected the winner on several occasions! Stamina is defintely up there with dance ability in order to keep going thro all the stages! Whoever thought Indian dancing was all just jumping and stomping around - forget it! We very quickly came to recognise that each dance has a combination of different steps and that it has to be danced in a set sequence - according to the sacred teachings. We thought how wonderful it was that in this modern age, we could see and feel a culture that has survived over the years and one that now seems to be finding new roads into retaining it%26#39;s age old ways and customs - and long may the Indian Nations continue, so that a few of us lucky ones out there can share this amazing experience. If anyone out there ever gets the chance to attend a Pow Wow - DO IT!
