Overnight between SLC and Yellowstone?

My family of 4 will be staying overnight in SLC after our flight. Plan is to pick up the rental car in the morning and hit the road. We would like to overnight somewhere between SLC and Yellowstone (first night will be in Grant Village). What would be a good stopping point? Pocatello? Idaho Falls? Any suggestions for lodging for a family? Ideas for things to do along the way?

TIA!

Overnight between SLC and Yellowstone?

Virginia, I%26#39;m flying into SLC and was going to fly then to Jackson Hole, Wy next Saturday. However, due to the JH airport closed for run way renovations, I now have to pick up a rental car in SLC and drive to JH. I%26#39;ve been told it%26#39;s a 5 hour drive. I found a furnished condo to rent at $90 per night 10 minutes outside of JH in an area called ';The Aspens';. Hotel rentals were high in JH so found this to be a good alternative. Yellowstone is an hour and a half drive from there, through the Great Teton National Park. While there you could spend time in the Tetons as you make your way North on the beautiful highway to Yellowstone. Hope this helps. Monica

PS. the place renting the condo is Mountain Property Management 1-800-992-9948 and I dealt w/ Cynthia. www.mpmjh.com

Overnight between SLC and Yellowstone?

We%26#39;ve done that trip before and will be doing it again in July. It is only a little over 5 hours to West Yellowstone which is the west entrance to YNP. We never stay anywhere on the road to YNP. We always make the trip after we fly into SLC. If you want to stop then stay in West Yellowstone and enjoy the IMAX theater and the Grizzly center before entering YNP.

We took an amazingly beautiful route via Bear Lake and spent a night or two in the Tetons it was well worth any extra miles. I had gotten the direction from this forum and I was glad we did.

An overnight stop isn%26#39;t needed for a 5 hour drive, but you will be staying at Grant Village.

I%26#39;d suggest one night in Jackson Hole to see the sights and visit the Teton NP visitor center in the morning before continuing to Grant Village through Teton and the Yellowstone south entrance.

There%26#39;s a rest stop on I 15 your family might enjoy, between Pocatello and Idaho Falls. Smack dab in the middle of an old lave field. Lots of good information and a short hike to stretch your legs.

Do you need input for rest of visit?

When we fly into SLC we enter the park thru West Yellowstone and then leave after a night in Jackson Hole and drive down to SLC to fly home. We get beautiful but different scenic drives that way.

Thanks everyone! I love this forum!!!!

I should have added that we want to do a loop and are staying in Jackson Hole and doing the Grand Teton tour at the end of our trip. Also, my husband wants to visit the sheep experiment station in Idaho (he%26#39;s arranging that on his own) so that%26#39;s why we thought we should spend the night somewhere along the way. We have five nights in Yellowstone and two in JH so I think we are OK on park time.

I will certainly check on the condo recommendation for the end of our trip!

Thanks!

I don%26#39;t know where the sheep station is that you%26#39;re going to be stopping to see, but if it%26#39;s not too far off the main highway you could still get to West Yellowstone that first day.

Otherwise, either Idaho Falls or Pocatello would make good stops - with maybe a little more to see in Idaho Falls.

Good Luck!

Just thought of another choice. The Island Park area in northern Idaho is very pretty and might make a nice stopping place too.

Thanks! Is the Craters of the Moon worth a side trip?

Craters of the Moon is definitely worth a side trip. It%26#39;s unlike anything you%26#39;ve ever seen!
