Ogden, Utah to Yellowstone route recommendation

This July, we are travelling from South Ogden about 7-8 am to Yellowstone South Entrance, and then on to Canyon Village to stay night. The next day we will travel from Canyon Village (probably through Mammoth Hot Springs) to the Old Faithful Inn (OFI). The final day my plan is to drive from OFI to the West Entrance, to I-15 back to Odgen area.

I see 3 options heading up the first day-

1)I-84 to Evanston and North through Jackson;

2)Logan to Jackson; and

3)I-15 to Idaho Falls and over pass to Jackson.

I really want to see the Tetons (even if from the car) on a leg of the trip, while allowing enough time to see sights in Yellowstone from South Entrance to Canyon Village in the afternoon the first day.

Which option is fastest, which is most scenic, and which would you take?

You%26#39;ll get lots of different opinions on this.

All of your options will give you a lovely drive through the Tetons from Jackson. Personally though, I would choose #2 as being the most scenic. Since you%26#39;ll be returning on I-15, I wouldn%26#39;t suggest going up the same way, even though the pass from Idaho Falls is very pretty I think that #2 will still give you a little different scenery.

Whichever you choose, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy the drive.

Have Fun!

Not a different opinion here. Full agree with Paula. #2, Logan Canyon scenic drive/Bear Lake.

I was looking at this yesterday for a different question and the I-15/Teton Pass route to Jackson is fastest but only by about half an hour. The Logan route also takes you through the Snake River Grand Canyon which is pretty scenic. Because the whole route is not that long, even all the way to YNP, I would definitely be taking the Logan route if I was doing it. Only about 4 hours to Jackson so an early start could have you to GTNP by mid-morning.

There are actually a couple routes you could take if you headed up I-15. I love the one through Driggs and over the Teton Pass as it gives you a great view of the west side of the Tetons.

The other would be to go from Idaho falls along the Snake River reservoir Palisades, this is nice too. But I agree that if you are coming back down I-15 you should not use this to go up.

That leaves the I-84 Evanston route or Logan canyon. The Evanston route has little scenic value, in the usual meaning of that word. We have seen plenty of elk and antelope going that route. But it is fast and easy as well, if you want the no-nonsense route take it.

I like the Logan Canyon/Bear Lake route- it is the prettiest and nicest and not that much different in time, unless you make lots of stops- which is certainly possible :-)

Wow, less than 24 hrs and four responses that are pretty much unanimous- thank you.

And here you have a 5th to support Logan Canyon as the way to go. The first view of Bear Lake from the summit is breathtaking. And take your time to stop at the bottom of the mountain for a famous raspberry shake.

How could I have forgotten about the raspberry shakes?!

That should be your deciding factor, socalcoug :-)

For what it%26#39;s worth, here%26#39;s another vote for the Logan Canyon route.

If you take this then stay on US 89 through Wyoming on your way to Jsckson, a brief and worthwhile stop off US 89 is the Perodic Spring near Afton. It located a short drive then hike down Swift Creek Rd.

I grew up in the Salt Lake area, and went to Bear Lake for a couple of Scout campouts, and to this day the raspberries I had there were the sweetest and juiciest I have ever had. If the shakes are even half as good, it will be worth the extra 20 minute drive.

Thanks for the periodic spring suggestion, I just looked it up on the Internet- weird.
