Entire road closed from Norris to Madison?

We%26#39;ll be at YNP end of Aug/early Sept, so after the Norris-Madison road closure. What I am wondering is if the entire road is closed, or just a section of it? Will it still be possible to see Artists%26#39; Paint Pots or Terrace Spring thermal area?

Also--we are staying at Canyon two nights. Say if we want to drive to the Norris geyser basin, will be be able to take the shorter road from Canyon junction to Norris junction? Or will we have to go all the way around (up to Tower from Canyon, than over to Mammoth, then down to Norris geyser basin)?

Thanks! You guys have been so helpful with all my trip planning!

We are also coming in early September and from what I have heard, the Artist Paint Pots trail will be accessible. Looks like the work is mainly concentrated at Gibbon Falls. Are you talking about the Terrace Springs area in Mammoth? If so, then sure, that area is fully accessible. Norris will be open so you can take the road between there and Canyon, or the other way (which ever you prefer). I plan on going all the way around the upper loop anyway just to see everything.

The road will be closed only from Madison Junction to Norris Junction. Artist Paint Pots are south of Madison Junction so they should be accessible as should Terrace Spring. However, traveling from West Yellowstone to Mammoth becomes quite a journey. There are several maps showing the construction areas and any closures for construction in the park at:

nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

Artist%26#39;s Paint Pots is actually about 9 miles north of Madison Junction. From what I%26#39;ve read, that area will remain accessible from Norris Junction - just drive south from there - about 4 miles. The construction will be concentrated in the Gibbon Canyon area, by the Falls.

And yes, you will be able to use the road across from Canyon to Norris.

Have Fun!

Artist Paint Pots are actually south of Norris junction. I%26#39;ve never been there yet so I can%26#39;t say exactly far but on the map it appears to be about 4 miles from the intersection at Norris.

Oops - heypaula, I posted right about the same time!

My oops - make that Tim -lol!

I have an oops too, I mis-remembered where the artist paint pots were. Sorry. Of all the things I%26#39;ve lost over the years, I miss my mind the most.

The 2009 Park newspaper says that the Madison Canyon road is open but with 15-30min delay during days. Is that right? Being closed during day would mess up our plans and add lots of driving.

Yes, that%26#39;s right. During spring and summer, work on the road may cause delays. This is the road between Madison and Norris, known as the Gibbon Canyon road (not Madison Canyon) Beginning August 17, the road closes so major work can be accomplished.
