We%26#39;re staying at Canyon Lodge cabins for 4 days in late July. It looks on the map as if Canyon City is actually a small town. Are there any restaurants in Canyon City so there will be an alternative to eating at the Lodge?
What's in Canyon City?If you study this website, you will find ';what services'; are ';where';.
www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/things2do.htm
Canyon Village, not City, has perhaps 3 dining locations, all administered by Xanterra under contract with the NPS. It is not a small town; it%26#39;s one of several sorta ';villages'; with tourist services.
Canyon is a very good central location, so you will enjoy the park even more. Glad you got lodging there.
For alternative dining, West Yellowstone...
What's in Canyon City?BTW, be aware that the ';Lodge'; is really a group of housing units, some rustic (Pioneer/Frontier cabins) to motel-like (Western Cabins). Don%26#39;t think ';Lodge'; in the usual sense.
Thank you, I did know that this was cabin living, but we were lucky to find accomodations even this far in advance, and the location does look good. I guess there%26#39;s just no way to escape the National Park Service dining!
Good morning Stormy,
People should never be advised to visit Yellowstone for the gourmet dinning and five star hotels. Yellowstone, as it should be, is all about the park, nature, the amazing wildlife and the great outdoors.
The lodging is basic, but adequate, and the food is the same. You will find somewhat more ';upscale'; dinning at The Old Faithful Inn, and at Lake Lodge, where reservations are required. However the rest of the concession services throughout the park are more along the lines of cafeteria style fast food places.
It is highly recommended that for daytime meals, a cooler with drinks and any kinds of ';portable foods'; you might think of, is the best way to remain out in the park, without the need for driving many miles to stand in line to eat. I%26#39;ve seen folks bring everything from granola bars and water, to full, lavish picnic spreads to eat right in the car, or at one of the many picnic areas throughout the park.
The restaurant at Canyon wasn%26#39;t all that bad. I had some kind of pulled pork thing that was good.
Service is spotty especially early in the season. If your server is experienced it will be good. If not, you%26#39;ll tell quickly. Keep your sense of humor and point out things to them.
I%26#39;ve read lots of posts recommending that you carry a cooler of snacks and sandwiches, but where do you get these things in the park? Granola bars and tortillas and smoked turkey???? Where would you buy these ingredients.
This is a silly post - we%26#39;ll find out when we get there!
No, not really silly. It%26#39;s best to stock up on that kind of thing in the gateway towns before you enter the park. Some of the park stores will have snacks and other light fare, but for selection and price you will be better off getting what you need ahead of time.
Well, it didn%26#39;t turn out to be such a silly post after all!
We%26#39;ll be spending the night before we enter the park in West Yellowstone. I might not have thought to stock up there, so thank you very much for that suggestion.
