We%26#39;re in the very early stages of planning this trip. We%26#39;re in a panic because we can%26#39;t make reservations yet. With 2 kids in college, each with summer classes, we don%26#39;t have a schedule yet.
We want to split our stay between JH and the Tetons, which do you prefer, in town or by teh lake?
Are we going to run out of town soon? When do the reservations ease up again, when the kids go back to school?
We are getting some GREAT info from this forum..THANKS TO ALL!
Planning a JH trip, better in town or by lake ? Also res ?s
Are you going into Yellowstone also? How long are you going to be here? If only for a few days then I would choose JH. Let us know more about your plans and we will give you more insight.

We%26#39;re planning to do JH and the Teatons. We have a week so we%26#39;d like to stay a few days in each. The further we get into it, the later it gets. It looks like each kid will be taking classes until the end of July which puts out trip last week in July/first week in August.
My kids were both college age when we came in 2007 and 2008 but we managed to get in a trip the last week of May before classes began for the summer. Are you interested in seeing any wildlife like buffalo, moose, eagles and bears? Instead of just concentrating on JH and the Grand Tetons I would spend a few days in Yellowstone. It is by far the most scenic in my opinion. It is nothing like you have ever seen in Pittsburgh. I would stay in either West Yellowstone or Gardiner for two nights for outside the park or call Xanterra ASAP for in park lodging and see part of YNP. The area around Mammoth and Old Faithful will allow you to see lots of wildlife. I would then come down through the GT and stay in either one of the lodges or travel down to JH. If you stay in JH it is very easy to go back into the GT and go to Jenny lake, etc. I would take a raft trip on the Snake River. Your kids will love that. In park reservations tend to book up fast but I think you should be able to find something now for out of the park reservations. We like to stay in JH because it is easy to go back into the GT and you have great places to shop and eat. Let us know when you have more plans in place and we can give you ideas for scenic routes and restaurant recommendations, etc.
I agree with CeCe, visit Yellowstone! Spend 4 days/nights in YS and 3 days/nights in Teton area. Look for lodging in West Yellowstone for the Yellowstone portion. Jackson is so close to the Tetons, you can stay there for the lodging/dining/shopping options .
Since the kids are in college, probably they have taken some science courses (or will) and Yellowstone is a great outdoor science classroom! A super volcano, lots of wildlife and more!
Also you may want to go on a float trip on the Snake River, rent canoes in the Tetons.
Enjoy planning!
Some would say, base in YNP, and see Jackson/GTNP for a day. Unless you are into hiking... you can do so in YNP, but it is different kinds of hiking.
A search today revealed that there are NO reservations available ANYWHERE in YNP. We are now looking outside of the park for cabin type reservations. My wife has a list to start with and I%26#39;ll post the places soon for comment.
hotrod,
Send a pm to yellowstonefan and she may be able to help you. She knows a lot about cabins, rentals in West Yellowstone. Good luck with your search. Just in Pittsburgh visiting my daughter- know you are glad spring has arrived- everything was in bloom.
We%26#39;re zeroing in on the following options, let me know what you think.
Sleepy Hollow Lodge
Eagle Ridge
Faithful Street Inn
Hibernation Station
Goods, Bads, whatever
We%26#39;ve not stayed in any of the inns but checked on TA and the Faithful Street Inn gets ok reviews. The others don%26#39;t seem to get good reviews or they are a distance from YNP. You want to be as close as possible to the west entrance.
Also check out the West Yellowstone Chamber of commerce website. Those people are very helpful- I%26#39;ve used them before when I had questions. They are local and know the area well.
