We will be there for 3 nights (1-1/2 days of free time) for a conference. I was looking at the weather averages and it seems like it is still pretty cold at night due to the elevation--will there still be snow on the ground? I am trying to figure out what clothes to bring.
Also, what would be a good, one-day visit to the park? We are walkers, not rugged hikers or climbers. We will have a rental car and fly into JAckson airport. Thanks!
Teton Village in mid-May?
May is a great time to visit Jackson Hole because the hotel rates are so affordable. May is an awful time to visit Jackson Hole because it is the off-off season. We were there last May and had a wide range of weather. For a couple days it was sunny and 60%26#39;s-70%26#39;s. Perfect! For a couple days after that it was 20%26#39;s-30%26#39;s, snowy and foggy. You really need to pack everything. We wore snow boots and winter coats one day, and jeans and tee-shirts another day. There was plenty of snow on the ground. In Grand Teton National Park, there was only 1 hike open (late May), because all of the other ones were snowed in. In Yellowstone National Park, there was ~9 feet of snow on either side of the road. Many restaurants are closed or have reduced hours. This time is after ski season, and before summer season. I recommend playing it by ear. See what the weather is like when you get there. Contact Teton National Park to find out what hikes are open. If none are, you can still drive through the park, see animals, check out the scenery. It is quite a drink up to Yellowstone, so make sure that you have time for that. When you get into town, ask your hotel%26#39;s concierge and call the parks to see what is open and what will work for the current weather. Either way, you%26#39;ll enjoy beautiful scenery and have a great time! Enjoy!
Teton Village in mid-May?
I think you were inquiring about visiting GTNP, not Yellowstone. You have an easy and spectacular drive along two parallel roads to enjoy it w/o hiking, and use the many viewpoints. Depending on snowfall possibilities, of course.
Should you decide to visit YNP, here is that website with re: to road openings, but weather can change that. Check the mileage map, YNP is huge and you%26#39;ll want to leave Jackson quite early; fortunately, daylight hours are many. Just don%26#39;t expect to see much of the park, only a few highlights, and that would be worthwhile.

Thanks. Would our best bet (no matter what the weather/snow) be one of those tours?
With only 1.5 days of free time, I think Yellowstone will have to wait. You really can see most of Tetons on your own without a guided tour.
I would begin your visit at Craig Thomas Visitor Center near Jackson. You can find out about Ranger guided tours and walks, as well as learn more about the park and places you may want to visit.
I would also visit the Colter Bay Vistor center and Indian Museum. www.nps.gov/grte for info.
Agreed not going to Yellowstone. But there seem to be Teton tours to see the park and animals. Might that be a better bet to book so as not to worry about road conditions? If there is any snow or ice I%26#39;d prefer not driving around there in a rental car.
Don%26#39;t rent a car. Rent an all wheel Subaru.
The locals vacation from mid April to mid May. You should have the town to yourself. You will still have that beautiful view.
