It would seem to me that the ';dining'; options are not very promising thru out the park? :) Will be staying at Old Faithful Sept 1, then the western cabins at Canyon Sept 2, 3 and 4 this coming fall. Are there some recommendations out there for eating decently? A thought had occured to me-- would it be possible to bring along my 2 burner camping stove and maybe do a little cooking in the western cabin? What do you thing? Any opinions out there?

No cooking allowed in the cabins. You can cook at the picnic areas and campgrounds, and outside the cabins. The food is decent, I would bring a cooler to keep breakfast/lunch stuff.

ah... glad to know that. I am not opposed to doing a little cooking out at the picnic areas, so might do that if the mood strikes me. Thanks for the info :) Looks that the western cabins have coffee makers (the most essential breakfast item) so that%26#39;s a plus.
I do always take lunch items in a cooler and lots of trail mix bars, etc when going on the long road trips. Nothing better than pulling off the road in the middle of nowhere and eating lunch. We%26#39;re easy, I guess... my husband and I. Some people do not consider that a ';vacation'; but we%26#39;re more interested in the views than the fine dining. Just hoping for some decent hot meals here and there.
I see you are from Santa Fe? Was there a couple of years ago on a southwestern road trip. Has to be my favorite place. Walking the old town and all of the sculptures and art work and old churches and... just loved it! Family is all here in Ohio, so... here I am. Just wanted to say I absolutely loved your town. My favorite area of the country that I%26#39;ve visited.
While the food/dining is not gourmet, it%26#39;s filling and you%26#39;ll be stoking up, really, for the next part of your YNP explorations. Bring binoculars if you can.
The many places to dine within the park will be decent and not horrible. Just don%26#39;t expect fancy and you probably will be pleasantly surprised.
The menu at the Lake Hotel main restaurant looks good and a fun atmosphere. We are planning on the Obsidian Room at Snow Lodge and Old Faithful Inn dining room.

PS.. glad you enjoyed Santa Fe. We have been here as a family close to 15 years (my husband was born here), and I grew up in Colorado. Can%26#39;t imagine living anywhere else.
thanks for the help and reassurances. We have 2 pair of binoculars and 2 cameras, by the way-- will definitely be with us :) Probably won%26#39;t even NOTICE the food, eh?
Thanks again!
would i be right in assuming that there are camp grills in the picnic areas for if we wanted to grill a hot dog or the likes for lunch?
Here%26#39;s a link that tells which picnic areas have grills: www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/picnic.htm
The Xanterra website will give you info about dining rooms etc. The cafeteria food isn%26#39;t gourmet - but it%26#39;s not as bad as you%26#39;re probably expecting :-)
If you decide you might want to splurge one night and eat at the OFI or Lake Hotel dining rooms, make sure to get reservations in advance.
Wherever you end up eating, the views will be magnificent. One of our favorite places is to pull off at an overlook in Hayden Valley - but there are many, many options to enjoy.
Have a great trip!
