anyone have experience with different camping spots in yellowstone? i am a 55yr.old inexperienced camper but willing to try camping with family members for the better part of a week. would prefer small cabins or tents on platforms - is there such a thing? nicest camping spots to recommend? don%26#39;t want to be a wimp but want to be safe. do you have to be super careful about animals in your campground and bothering you in the tents? thanks!

Canyon would be about as good of a compromise as any.
Here%26#39;s a link some information from thePark Service website.

Canyon is centrally located and has all the facilities.
Small cabins aren%26#39;t camping. At least not in Yellowstone. Look at www.xanterra.com to see what the various cabins look like. Roosevelt is in a nice location but isb%26#39;t central. We really like it. Their cabins for the most part don%26#39;t have water or bath so its a lot like camping with hard walls. Roosevelt is at the entrance to Lamar Valley.

You are one good sport to try camping at 55, I salute you.
You don%26#39;t provide details of your trip (e.g., # days, when coming, how many, ages if any youngsters, etc.). I think we could better advise you knowing such things.
Canyon is very central, whether with cabins or camping. You might find cabins available if you keep calling Xanterra, but again, not knowing answers to above, hard to respond further.

Thanks for replies so far. We would be camping and hiking about with our 4 kids who are in their 20%26#39;s - a sort of family reunion vacation. None of us has been to Yellowstone and the kids had expressed interest in something like this. We would be flying out on a Sat. and returning the following Sat. or Sunday, so we would have a good 5-6 days to explore. Would anyone recommend also trying to include the Tetons as well? Thanks for any suggestions on areas and things to do.
and we will probably be going sometime this july or august. thanks again for any suggestions!
Where would you be flying into/out of? You really do want to see the Tetons too. There is always a reason that a place is designated a national park. The Tetons are no exception.
We%26#39;ve tent camped for years and have never had problems with animals bothering our tent. Keep your tent clean, no food or anything with a food or sweet odor inside and the animals will see it as a big rock to walk around. Make sure you look outside before opening the tent ';door'; to see that there isn%26#39;t a bison or elk standing right there. Surprising them isn%26#39;t a cool thing to do.

That reminds me of the time we were at Grant Village tenting with our 4 month old daughter...We had a buffalo parked not 10 feet from our tent door. We waited for awhile, but could see it wasn%26#39;t going anywhere soon so we very quietly and slowly made our way out and around to the car. We were glad it was gone when we came back.
Good for you. We were tent campers for years but bought a Jayco Pop-up on my retirement. We leave it on a permanent site in California%26#39;s Trinity Alps so I suggested we dig out our old tent/gear for our August vacation to Rocky Mountain National Park, The Black Hills %26amp; Yellowstone. My 57 year old wife let me know in no uncertain terms NO TENT Camping on our trip.
Oh well, it was just a thought. LOL
I%26#39;m with your wife on this one! Why crawl in and out of a tent, get up and down off the ground, when you have a popup? I spent decades camping in tents, and now I have an Aliner Scout which I am taking to Yellowstone in August!
I just have to remember to keep it smell free before we go to Yellowstone. Bacon and eggs at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon always smell so good, but, ironically, I%26#39;ll stil be eating outside so that I can keep the Aliner smell free.
BTW, I will be at Canyon campground and have heard that it is a great place to camp!
peddler665, Tell your wife I think she is a wimp. My wife and I are about her age and expect to sleep in a tent for more than 3 weeks this summer. With a decent tent, self-inflating air mats and good sleeping bags you can be quite comfortable in a tent.
