Car rental for RV trip

We are traveling as a family of 6 (2 adults - 4 kids) to Yellowstone in early June and are concerned about getting around. We are taking a RV from Indiana to Yellowstone and we were wondering if we should rent a van when we get there. Driving the RV around Yellowstone for a few days seems really unrealistic. Any suggestions?

Personal view? Fewer RVs, especially large ones, on the YNP roads would be nice.

Tourist view? You%26#39;ll find these roads much easier in a van, including both the driving, visibility and ability to pull over far more easily than with a large RV.

How many days will you be visiting YNP? The more the better.

Car rental for RV trip

I have nothing against RV%26#39;s but I sure hate to be behind one in Yellowstone. I think we always get behind the people who have rented one once they got to the area and are nervous driving it, so they go really slowwwwww. Which is okay in many situations, but not always! Anyways, I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;d probably get better gas mileage in a van than an RV? If so, the cost of renting the van may even out. Parking will also be easier, and navigating winding roads may be easier too.

If you%26#39;re asking for suggestions about where to rent a van once you get there, I%26#39;m not too sure. Maybe Gardiner, West Yellowstone, or Jackson? Billings might be an option too-might get better rates by the airport and then (assuming you have two drivers) one could drive the van, one could drive the RV into the park, leave it wherever you%26#39;re staying, and just use the van inside the park.

We checked into renting a car to avoid the potential $5/gal diesel for a diesel guzzling tow vehicle. Rentals were available from West Yellowstone and somewhat reasonable in price given the lcoation and (my perceived) demand.

Parking is always an issue we%26#39;ve ran into with using a rental RV. I always want to go where there%26#39;s no (or limited) RV parking.

I%26#39;m being warned by experienced RVers to stay out of the park with our rig as much as possible to avoid crowds and mountain passes. Of course, renting and driving a 30 foot class C motorhome through the park is probably very different than a combined 58 foot in length, 29,000 lb GCW 5th wheel set up! Besides, we%26#39;d be slow and sightseeing. The perfect obstacle referenced above!

We will be staying at Fishing Bridge so it will be much easier to just leave the RV parked and jump into a van. That%26#39;s definitely what we are going to do, now we just need to decide where to get the van. Thanks for your reply.

Where you rent a van would depend on where you come in to Yellowstone from, ie, Cody or Cooke City and where you are going after so as not to backtrack. West Yellowstone, Cody, and Jackson would all have vans.

We are parking our travel trailer in rv park in West Yel. and driving our Silverado around the park. Much better!
