Cheaper Fly Fishing?

First, a huge thanks to everyone that has helped me plan our trip! We are so looking forward to our vacation (beginning of June).

We are very interested in trying fly fishing (well, most the boyfriend) but we have been looking into some companies for a half day trip and they are running like $300/person! Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative? We%26#39;ve never done fly fishing before, but I%26#39;m not sure I am willing to pay that much per person!

Thanks in advance!

What%26#39;s worse, you might spend much time just learning how to cast! :) You have, word has it, a few lakes in your home state, why not take a class from local fly fishing dealers (Cabelas?).

Cheaper Fly Fishing?

I agree with ';voyaging';...you%26#39;ll definitely want to squeeze in some fly fishing practice before committing the time and money to doing it in Grand Teton area. Its kind of an art, that takes time to learn. I%26#39;m sure it would be an awesome experience in the Tetons, but if the money conerns you...maybe consider doing some other fun/unique activities while there: white water rafting the snake river, renting a small motor boat at Colter Bay and spending a few hours on Jackson Lake, renting a canoe from Dornan%26#39;s, horseback riding, etc...

Good luck, let us know if you find some good rates on fishing though.

Good suggestions already posted.

As for prices, there will be some variation between companies - but not much. They all run about the same. One of the main reasons the price is so high is that it%26#39;s not a group activity - it would just be the 2 of you and the guide.

If you do decide to go with a guide, it will certainly be a fun - and beautiful - time on the river. But I agree that you should take some classes first - or even just go to a nearby Cabela%26#39;s for their hands-on demonstrations. Your and your boyfriend may well get ';hooked'; on the sport :-)

Good Luck!

Our family is going to Yellowstone in July and I just booked a fly fishing trip with Arricks fly shop for half day trip for 2 for $295 My brother and his son wanted to go but the rest of us will be doing something else. I called and they were very nice over the phone.

Thanks for the info lizzie!

Here is Arrick%26#39;s website: http://www.arricks.com/guidetrips/

From looking at it, their prices do seem lower - the $295 trip is for 1/2 day wading, which is fun too. They also have a 1/2 day float trip for 2 for $350 - good prices, hami!

Would be just a little careful to about finding a place to fly fish this time of year. We have a pretty good snowpack up here this time of year and once it warms up, all of the rivers are going to be very muddy and the fishing will not be good. Yellowstone Lake is a great place to fish, but it usually does not open until the mid of June. A lot will depend on how warm May is up here, so if you do book something, just give them place a call as you get closer to make sure the fishing is good and there are some clear rivers that you can fish.

Uh-oh, I%26#39;m embarrassed to have missed the timing here. Thanks for catching that Jackson.

Spring runoff will make the rivers run fast and muddy for several weeks, so do ask about that when making reservations.
