Looking at taking on this hike with the family in July and was wondering which of the two hikes to the top is better for wildlife and views. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your help!
Washburn Hike. Better from Dunraven Pass or Chittenden Road?
Having only hiked the Chittenden road route, I%26#39;d say that it might be the better for viewing wildlife simply because it is more open. The route from Duraven pass seems to spend more time in the trees.
That said, the only wildlife we saw on our hike in June 2007 was bighorn sheep, but we did see them pretty close up when they decided to pass on both sides of us while we were resting.
Washburn Hike. Better from Dunraven Pass or Chittenden Road?
Planning on doing the same hike in July with the family. Chittenden is the trailhead that most hikers use per the Falcon guide. Dunraven Pass is listed as an alternative route of the same moderate intensity. Earlier in the book, DP is listed as a place to see bears(didn%26#39;t say which kind, but another book mentioned brown bears) which could be good or bad for you. It is recommended that you hike this 5 mile out and back trail earlier in the day to avoid possible exposure to lightning in the afternoon...the earlier you go the better the chance of seeing more wildlife. This should be a great hike especially with the almost certain chance that we will see Bighorn sheep up close in the wild - a first for us.
