Cody is really too far to be a viable base for Yellowstone. If you can get lodging anywhere inside the park I think you will be happier. Otherwise, try West Yellowstone or Gardiner.
Can%26#39;t give you advice on flying-we always drive from the Chicago area and it%26#39;s a great road trip. Make sure you can get adequate lodging before booking a flight. I know August seems far away, especially after the rough winter we%26#39;ve had in Illinois, but we booked in January and had limited choices at that point. Calling Xanterra directly may work better than relying on the website.
We have been to YNP in mid August and late August and the weather and crowds have been varied but pleasant--not too busy, not too hot, not too cold.

I will also be visiting Yellowstone the beginning of August. As youself, we will be flying into Salt Lake and. We have planned a day to visit Salt Lake and we will driving to visit Yellowstone/GT National parks for the remainder of our trip. We will be staying in West Yellowstone where there are numerous accomodations. You may still be able to get accomodations in the park as well. We chose to stay in West Yellowstone due in part to its accessability from Salt Lake and the fact that the accomodations in the park do not have some of the amenities that my family seems to need. Hope this answers some of your questions.
Happy that you%26#39;ll be able to visit YNP.
Do NOT lodge in Cody, it is way too far from this huge park.
West Yellowstone or, my preference, in the park; either is OK.
If you cannot get lodging you need or want from the park website, call constantly until you do (and you can call from the States when you arrive).
You can reserve lodging in W. Yellowstone then if park lodging becomes available, you can cancel. BUT, make sure you understand cancellation policies of the West Yellowstone motel.
