beartooth highway or cody

I have a week in yellowstone, one day already for the Grand Tentons. If I only have time for one drive out of the park should it be the beartooth highway or the road to Cody? I will be staying at Roosevelt on the 11th and 12th of June so I will be close to both. By the way, reading this forum has been very helpful in planing my trip. Thanks!!

In both 2007 and 2008 the Beartooth was closed when we were there in early June. So I cannot give you any insight on that but hope to drive it this year when we come in July. We have been to Cody and enjoyed the rodeo and museums. The drive was nice and scenery different out the east entrance of YNP.

thanks for your reply, I%26#39;m hoping this June is a little more spring than winter. I saw some pictures of the beartooth highway and thought they were amazing. I do like the idea of seeing a real western town like Cody, and I would like to see the ghost town nearby. Do you know anything about Red Lodge and things to do there?

I%26#39;ve driven both the Beartooth and the road to Cody twice and both are amazing. Would it be possible for you to come in to YNP on the Beartooth and leave via the East entrance and Cody? That%26#39;s how we%26#39;ve always done it on our way to and from Illinois which may work for you. Both routes are rather time consuming which is why we%26#39;ve always worked them in during our regular travel time instead of approaching them as a side trip.

Red Lodge is a wonderful town. I love the shops and restaurants. Cody is also very nice, and we enjoyed their downtown and also the rodeo.

If I had to only pick one, I guess I would pick the Beartooth and Red Lodge, but Cody is an extremely close second.

If I had time for only one drive, the Beartooth would be it. If I had a full day (really full day) I might drive out the Beartooth to the Rock Creek Overlook, backtrack to the Chief Joseph highway and take that down to Cody and then come back into Yellowstone by way of the east entrance. These roads are fairly slow traveling and you will want to make plenty of stops for pictures so make sure you start early.

thnaks for everybodys help. If we can we will take a whole day and try to do part of the beartooth highway and also cody.

Cody might disappoint in terms of a ';real western town';; not that it isn%26#39;t, but I%26#39;d rather see, e.g., Ennis, Virginia City and other places. Unless you have at least 2 - 3 hours in Cody to see the fascinating and well done Buffalo Bill Museums, I%26#39;d opt for the Beartooth Hwy.

thanks I%26#39;ll check into Ennis and Virgina City
