We%26#39;re interested in taking a fly fishing day trip and definitely want to go with a guide. I googled and Greater Yellowstone Flyfishers looked to have very good day trips. I also called to make an initial inquiry.
I%26#39;m looking for any comments before making a deposit.
Greater Yellowstone Flyfishers Guide Service + or -Sorry, I can%26#39;t help you with this guide service. Everytime we go to Yellowstone, we go on our own and never have a guide.
I searched for reviews and found a couple that were all good.
Greater Yellowstone Flyfishers Guide Service + or -I don%26#39;t have any experience with this company either, but they are on the NPS%26#39; list of approved outfitters: www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/fishbsn.htm
You don%26#39;t say where you%26#39;ll be staying when you visit, but you might want to check out some of the guide services based in West Yellowstone: www.westyellowstonechamber.com/play/fishing/
Whoever you choose, the fishing will be great!
Thanks Casey 101. We always have had better luck when we%26#39;ve used a guide in western North Carolina. We%26#39;ll be staying in Gardiner with fishing Yellowstone Rive right outside our door on our own, too!
Thanks HeyPaula717!. We%26#39;re staying in Gardiner - right on west bank of the Yellowstone River. So, we%26#39;ll have the opportunity to fly fish on our own right outside our front door! We tried to pick a ';central'; local depending on where the guide thinks the fishing might be best - Lamar, Slough Creek, Yellowstone, Gallatin, or Madison - depending on the water levels and hatch.
We also stayed in Gardiner on our last visit. We had our 3 kids with us (5, 2, and 1) so mom stayed back at the hotel so at least dad could get some fishing in.
Have fun and good luck!
Good plan, truegrit. When is your trip?
There was an article in the paper this morning that the ';Mother%26#39;s Day'; caddis hatch is starting on the Yellowstone - right on time for a change :-) My hubby%26#39;s anxious for it to get over here on the Madison before the spring runoff muddies the river - it%26#39;s quite an experience if you hit it right!
We will be in Yellowstone the last week of July. My husband will be throwing his waders and gear in the car, and is hoping to find some spots along the rivers to do a little fishing. He is a catch and release fisherman.
Any advice as to where he might give it a try? We%26#39;ll be staying in a Canyon Lodge cabin for four days.
We%26#39;ll be entering the park from W. Yellowstone. Since it%26#39;s in Montana, and I assume he%26#39;ll need a Wyoming fishing license, where would he get it?
Thanks to all,
Sally
Sally,
If he%26#39;ll just be fishing inside the Park, he won%26#39;t need a state fishing license. He will need a Park one though, and he can get that either at the entrance or any of the general stores, etc. in the Park.
Here%26#39;s a link to the general fishing regulations: www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/fishing.htm
Since he%26#39;s already used to catch and release he shouldn%26#39;t have any problems - just remember the barbless hooks and no-lead sinkers, etc.
Coming in from West Yellowstone you%26#39;ll be driving along the Madison River - when it crosses over to your right, there will be numerous pull-outs. The fishing along there is almost always good - and the scenery is worth it even if it%26#39;s too warm and the fish aren%26#39;t biting!
Also, he can fish along the Firehole, the Yellowstone, and the Gibbon (except where access may be restricted due to construction). In addition, there are numerous streams throughout YNP - and some of the smaller ones have some pretty good little trout in them. If you go hiking anywhere, tell him to take his rod along - my sons and hubby always found a place to fish!
Have Fun!!
Thank you so much, he%26#39;ll be thrilled! When you Google fly fishing all you get are guided fishing tours, and he%26#39;s not interested in that.
It goes without saying (but I will) that someone on Tripadvisor would have the answers.
We%26#39;ll get his license when we enter the park from W. Yellowstone, where we%26#39;re spending the night in order to get a nice early start into the park.
If you%26#39;ll be staying in West Yell. I%26#39;m pretty sure you can get Park licenses at the fly shops there too :-)
