renting a scope

Is there anywhere in the park I can rent a scope for a week? I found a place in Gardiner but was hoping some of the visitor centers of stores in the park rented them also. Thanks!

Here is a TA Forum string re: your question:

If not, plug in Scope Rental in the Search box.

One person suggested that, rather than spend the money on a rental, ask scopers what they are observing. Most will allow you to look, so that is true. However, if you are going to spend time observing, a rental makes good sense.

Binoculars are more important for most viewing conditions, scopes are frosting on the cake.

To my knowledge none of the park stores or visitor centers rent scopes. The one that you mentioned in Gardiner also has a pick up and drop off location in Silver Gate, and that can be a bit out of the way too, unless you concentrate you efforts on the northern range..... which you really should spend some time doing anyway, even without a scope!

They used to have rental scopes at Silver Gate Cabin Rentals, but they went to their cabin rental customers first, then if they had any left they were available to the public.

As Voyaging said, binoculars are more important for the first time, or ';casual'; park visitor. If you just want an introduction and an occasional peek through a scope, one of us will be happy to oblige you with that. However if you plan on spending any amount of time over a scope, then rental really is the best way to go.

Enjoy your visit!

We have let many people look through our scope but few get to actually watch. If you decide to rent one, you can watch animal interractions as long as you want.

We had a fairly cheap Bushnell scope the first year and it was OK. Not as nice as the one we bought later but better than the binocs we had. If you get a scope at all, you%26#39;ll also need a tripod or monopod. The tripod would come with the rental.

thanks for all the help. I have really good binoculars. That should be good enough for my first time at Yellowstone.

You mentioned scope rental in Gardiner. Where? We%26#39;ll be using Gardiner as our base for three days and might be interested in scope rental vs purchasing new pr of binocs.

Thanks!

Here%26#39;s one.
