We are leaving coastal Washington on Sunday June 12th. Need to be in Minneapolis by Thursday the 16th in the late evening. We would like to make a quick stop at Yellowstone. Any reccomendations on where to stay and what to see on that short timeframe? We have a 7 year old.
Advice on short trip to YellowstoneGrayland area? Cran...
This proposed trip would be, I think, hard on a 7 year old. And when in YNP it is stop and go at view areas and for wildlife. And parking, walking some geyser activity, and return to car... you would all probably feel pretty rushed, which diminishes the enjoyment of the park%26#39;s wonders.
And you would need lodging for one night, so you%26#39;d need to read some of our other posts as to how and where.
You%26#39;d have two days to get there, two days to Minneapolis, more or less. Unsure how much time you%26#39;d have to really experience YNP. I%26#39;d personally not do it given your time constraints, but instead stop at interesting places en route w/o the intensity of trying to experience YNP for a day (or less).
Advice on short trip to YellowstoneYes Grayland...7 yr old is good traveller. Plan on making it to Missoula Sunday...Yellowstone Monday afternoon, all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning...Does this sound possible??? If so where do you recommend we try to stay?? North, West or NE??
You can do this. I%26#39;d stay in West Yellowstone, many lodgings/motels. Better call ASAP for your reservations.
I figured Grayland because of your use of Cran - dawg, figured a UW Husky in the cranberry growing region. A friend had a cranberry farm in Bandon.
My philosophy on travel has always been to take advantage of what is available, even if it is for only a short time. I have never been disappointed! I say go for it, enjoy what you can and finish your trip to Minnesota glad you got to enjoy some of YNP.
Should mention that, if you can get lodging in YNP, good, but not necessary. You%26#39;d have to call Xanterra (after reviewing their website) to determine the kind of lodging you need.
Whether or not you stay in the park, you can choose I-90 to head East or go via the Beartooth Hwy., spectacular but slow for quite a bit of it, then to Minneapolis.

While more time would be better, you may as well see what you can this summer. My first experience with Yellowstone was a brief visit on my family%26#39;s way from Tennessee to visit relatives in Idaho and Washington when I was 12. We drove through Jackson Hole, arrived in Yellowstone in mid-afternoon and departed after lunch the next day.
We might have had 8 hours of daylight in the park. It was a childhood memory that I cherish to this day. It took me 36 years to get back to the park for a more thorough visit, but I am glad I had the exposure to Yellowstone as a child. Have a good trip and get all that you can out of your short stay.
Did you say you would have two days to see Yellowstone?
That should be fine for a quick visit. Do one side or loop one day and the other the next day. Don%26#39;t try to see it all, but find out what for sure you want to see: Old Faithful, Canyon, Mammoth would be the big ones for sure.
