GT/YNP itinerary- too little or too much time in each area?

Our family of 4 with 2 girls ages 10+11 are arriving into Jackson Hole May 24. Trip plan Grand Teton NP-2 days Yellowstone NP-7 days then departure to Billings via the Beartooth Hwy.

1st + 2nd night??? We would like to explore the Grand Teton area for 2 days.

Would you suggest our first night in Teton Village or Jackson? We will get up bright and early to go look for animals!

We would then like to move a little closer to YNP the next night (we don%26#39;t mind changing hotels). The 3 in the park seem rather pricy and wondered if anyone has any advice where we should stay the second night on our way up to YNP.

3rd + 4th nights- Old Faithful Inn

5th night- Lake Yellowstone Hotel (annex)

6th + 7th nights- Canyon Village (western cabin)

8th + 9th nights- Mammoth Area (frontier cabin)

10th day + night- driving the Beartooth Hwy and staying somewhere in Red Lodge???

11th day- drive to Billings to catch our flight home to Atlanta

I would LOVE to hear anyone%26#39;s thoughts and suggestions for our trip since we have never been and want to make sure we do this area justice.

MANY THANKS!!!

GT/YNP itinerary- too little or too much time in each area?

We like staying in Jackson Hole. It is very easy to go back into the GT.

GT/YNP itinerary- too little or too much time in each area?

Bring binocular(s). The plan sounds good, though I%26#39;d spend one night at most at Mammoth rather than two. Have you checked out lodging at Tower/Roosevelt? Or Silver Gate/Cooke City? Since you%26#39;ll be driving the Beartooth Hwy. anyway...

I agree with CeCe about staying in Jackson Hole rather than Teton Village - better accessibility to GTNP and more to do and see in the evenings. I would just plan on spending your first 2 nights there. Other than the Park lodging, there aren%26#39;t many other economical options in between YNP and GTNP. Also, while you%26#39;re in Jackson, you might want to consider rafting the Snake River - it%26#39;s a great experience!

I think too that 1 night at Mammoth is more than enough - unless you have specific reasons for wanting to be in that area. Otherwise, the formations there are easily seen in a day trip. Personally, I would try to cancel the 2 nights at Mammoth and add them to either Lake and/or Canyon - more central locations.

One other suggestion - if you haven%26#39;t already done so, check out the Junior Ranger program on the NPS website - I think your girls would enjoy it.

Good Luck - and come back with any further questions!

Thanks so much for everyone%26#39;s info!

We will plan on Jacksone Hole for our visit to the Tetons and will try for more nights at Canyon instead of Mammoth and then Silver Gate/Cooke City for our night before be head down the Beartooth and go to the Nature Center there.

Any recomendations for lodging Red Lodge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You will enjoy the Beartooth Nature Center in Red Lodge. All the animals are rescued from the wilderness and can not be returned. The current location is small and rather cramped but they do a really good job with the animals. They have bought a much larger tract of land outside of town and are currently fund-raising to build a new center. Each exibit has a story about each animal and how it came to the Nature Center.

My daughter, grandson and I go every year on Mother%26#39;s Day and look forward to it very much.

Thanks for all of your great replies! We have changed a few things in our itinerary based on your suggestiosn so I%26#39;m sure we will have an awesome trip. Many thanks again!!!

I agree about staying just one night in Mammoth. You may check into the Lake yellowstone Hotel and Cabins and check out the differences between the annex rooms and the little yellow cabins. The cabins are fun and less expensive.

Since you are going in May, be sure to check and see when the Beartooth Highway opens for the season..

We have stayed at the Super 8 in Cooke City and had a good experience.

As far as Red Lodge goes, there are many options. i can tell you that we stayed at Chateau Rouge. The room was fine but the outside needs mega-upkeep. There was bird droppings all over the porch from the many nesting birds and it was pretty gross. When in Red Lodge, I can recommend dining at the Red Lodge Pizza Company

Have fun!

We%26#39;re booked below although I cannot decide which place to stay in Grand Teton!

1 nt. Jackson (Cowboy Village Resort)

1 nt. Grand Teton

2 nts. Old Faithful Inn

1 nt. Mammoth Hot Springs Lodge

3 nts. Canyon Village (western cabin)

1 nt. Lake Village (frontier cabin)

2 nts. Red Lodge (Beartoothe Hideaway Inn)

We have not booked at Grand Teton yet. Prices are high and as follows: Colter Bay $145, Signal Bay $187 or Jackson Lake cabin $219- we want to get up early and be in the best area to hike and have beautiful views of the Tetons and closeup wildlife. Jackson Lake lodge is expensive (apparently they have done a huge 4 million renovation but the meadow below seems so big and far out that I%26#39;m afraid we won%26#39;t have great views of wildlife. They also told me the park has closed off the trails in that area to protect the wildlife) Any suggestions here or other comments would be greatly appreciated- thanks!

We stayed at Signal Mountain Lodge and had great views. As far as wildlife goes, in comparison to Yellowstone, the species are limited. You will see much more wildlife in Yellowstone (get up bright and early there)than Grand Teton NP so i would count on the tetons for the views, photography and hikes and Yellowstone for many more wildlife ops.
