We will be visiting YNP for the first time in mid June and are concerned about the weather. I have viewed travellers photos on tripadvisor and have seen a couple of pictures showing snow in June. (Very surprised by the amount of snow on Beartooth Pass on 26th June!)
I have read various information regarding the weather conditions and need advice on what we should ideally be bringing to wear. I was hoping by that time of year it would be summer like - I%26#39;m now unsure. Should we be bringing heavy trousers and sweatshirts? or is it rare for it to be really cold and snowy? How cold is YNP at dawn and dusk?
Any advice would be great as I%26#39;m really confused as to what to pack in my suitcase!
Thanks
Snow in June???
Your June may be warmer than ours but here%26#39;s a link to a trip report and pictures.

It was 28 one morning but I don%26#39;t know about the others. It was frequently around 40 but very windy later in the day. It snowed several days but usually melted off by late afternoon.
We had a blast but were ready for the cold. You need to bring some heavy layers. Something to stop the wind will help too.
Our trip started June 7 and by the end of the week it warmed up nicely.
Snow in June???
Bring a jacket just to be sure and layer your clothing. In 2007 in early June the weather was beautiful and warm and the same week in 2008 it was cold, snowing and icy. Check on the weather before you leave home.
You%26#39;ve already received good advice about layering.
At that time of year, it will generally be cool in the mornings (30%26#39;s/40%26#39;s F.) and also will cool down quickly after sunset.
Daytime temperatures are unpredictable from year to year, as already has been mentioned, so keep checking the weather beforehand - and be prepared for anything!
Hi mvrag,
Great timing, bears should be coming out about then and boy are they hungry. Last year we went from June 24 to July 5 and then on all of them it was nice relaxing temperature during the day when the sun got up for a little bit (around 10am) and as soon as the sun went down, the temp. dropped and it got cold. I remember though that two weeks before we left they did have a good snow storm go through and there was some snow on the side on higher elevations(beartooth mountain and on the mountain near tower junction). So its hard to say until you literally get within weeks of mid June whether it will snow. But thats a small price to see yellowstone awakening from its winter slumber. Absolutely awe-inspiring.
typically by that time of the year, the highs for the days are usually in the 70s and 80s, but it always gets cool once the sun goes down. Bring a light coat and then bring a couple long sleeves shirts that you can wear under it in case it happens to get really cool during a night or two.
The weather in Wyoming changes really fast. It could be raining and even snowing one morning (although in late June the chance of that are low) and then as soon as the next day be 70-80 degrees. Don%26#39;t let it scare you...it is actually pretty fun and entertaining when it does happen.
You never know about the weather in Yellowstone.
We were there last June in the snow (to my husbands horror), but it was good to see how it would look in the winter as I have no chance of visiting then.
We saw wolves, bears, moose. I was standing in a blowing snowstorm with little visibility trying to photograph a wolf. I don%26#39;t know how I managed to get a good shot by shivering with excitement, the cold and the weight of the lens.
My one regret was Beartooth was closed, but all the animals made up for it.
Just be prepared for any weather. The microfleece sweaters are good, cost about £10 and are very light for packing and warm to wear, plus waterproof trousers, jacket and hiking shoes- all available from hiking shops.
Plus I took 2 pair jeans, 2 pair shorts, long and short sleeved t shirts, trainers and sandals.
Remember you will be in the mountains so you won%26#39;t need dressy clothes (as for Europe).
Thanks for all your great advice. We have brought ourselves a couple of pairs of zip-off trousers that can turn into shorts as the weather hopefully warms up throughout the day! We will have a light jacket with us and have decided that if nessesary we will buy a Yellowstone fleece/sweatshirt (for comfort and souvenir).
8 weeks to go... can%26#39;t wait!!!
We were also in the Park last year from June 6-12. We had lots of snow, but it didn%26#39;t stay on the roads long. The Beartooth was closed and Dunraven Pass was only open 1 of the days we were there. The only day the snow really affected us was on June 12 when we had to change our route to Denver due to a foot of snow at Togwotee Pass.
All of that being said, it was a great trip. Wildlife was abundant, the scenery with the snowfall was beautiful and we saw things we didn%26#39;t expect to see. We had no heavy coats, but we did have gloves, hats, jeans, thermal underwear, sweatshirts and waterproof windbreaker jackets. We just layered up and took off layers when the sun came out. There were many tourist who were caught by surprise and were trying to buy coats in West Yellowstone.
You will have a great trip. I wish I was going back this June!
