What type of scope do you recommend?

I%26#39;d like to purchase a viewing scope for my husband prior to our annual Yellowstone trip in August. We specifically enjoy watching the wolves in Lamar Valley but will probably expand to other areas since we%26#39;ll have more time to visit this year.

Does anyone have ant recommendations? Why one scope over another and what is the approximate cost. I understand I%26#39;ll need to purchase a tripod too. Thanks for any advice.

You%26#39;ll be spending between $300 and $2500 or so not including the tripod. What you get for more money is a sharper lens and greater sensitivity to light.

www.eagleoptice.com is a good source of information and they have a large selection.

We have a Swarovski scope that was pretty expensive. Some of the Nikon ones are good and somewhat cheaper.

I don%26#39;t know where you%26#39;re staying but you can rent scopes in Gardiner and Cooke City / Silver Gate. That might be your best deal.

I wrote an Inside Page which responds to your questions and then some.

For wildlife viewing and photography:

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60999-c96653/Yellows…

Binoculars, good ones, are far more important than a spotting scope (and I don%26#39;t mean a scope used for hunting).

As noted on the Inside Page, lots of folks with spotting scopes are happy to let you take a look, a look that will amaze because the good ones are that good. And you won%26#39;t have spent the money. Rental is also a good idea.

These things are all covered on the IP; if not, query further. :)

My post above should say www.eagleoptics.com.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate your help.
