This board is great for information! Thanks!
My husband and I are flying into Jackson on July 3, spending the night at Anglers Inn. We are getting in early enough (2pm) to get a quick peak at GTNP before sunset, then a few more stops there on the way to YNP the next day. We have two nights booked at Mammoth Frontier Cabins then two nights at Grant Village. (Hopefully early) on July 8 we will head out driving across Wyoming towards Devil%26#39;s Tower. We would like to stop in Cody for a couple of hours, then head to somewhere from Buffalo to Morecroft to sty the night. The morning of July 9 head to Devil%26#39;s tower, then over into SD where we have 3 nights booked in Rapid City at La Quinta to use as a base to see the Black Hills sights. We fly out of Rapid City on July 12.
What do you think of this itinerary? Where do you recommend we stop and stay the night on July 8? What is the best way to drive from YNP to Cody then Cody East? I would prefer to avoid what I expect would be traffic in Sheridan because it is their rodeo then. Do you think a couple of hours in Cody will give us time to check out a few of the sites there? How long will it take us to get from Grant Village to Cody?
Where to stay overnight driving from YNP to Devil's tower?
Hi Debinnh,
We did that trip last year except started in Black Hills and ended up in YNP and Cody. Sheridan is a good place to stay. It has a nice Wingate Inn but there is also a few places near Sundance. It should take you several hours to get to Cody and then at least 2-3 hours at a minimum to do the museums. Have a good trip. We are going to your neck of the woods in early October.
Where to stay overnight driving from YNP to Devil's tower? Thanks, but we don%26#39;t want to stay in Sheridan due to the rodeo and Sundance is farther than we want to drive that day.
Would people recommend Buffalo or Gillette? If we spend a couple of hours in Cody, how long would it take to drive from Cody to either of these cities? What is the best route to drive from YNP to Cody?
Thanks.
The best route to Cody is out the east entrance of YNP park. Buffalo and Gillette both have nice hotels. Buffalo is about 3 hours from Cody and Gillette is about 4 hours from Cody. Hope this helps.
Thanks. So it seems that things are closer in Wyoming than I thought. Maybe we could get to Sundance or Hulett easily that same day? How long is it from Cody to Sundance or Hulett?
Also, I just realized I asked the wrong question. I wanted to know the best way to get from Cody to Buffalo. There are many roads leading from Cody and then over the mountains. It looks like the shortest route is 14/16/20 to Greybull, shouth on 433 to Worland then east on 16, but that gets pretty winding through the mountains. I could also head northeast out of Greybull on 14 towards Sheridan then south on 87, but I was trying to avoid what I would expect would be traffic due to the rodeo in Sheridan. Or I could skip going through Greybull and to north on alt14 until I get to Sheridan and head south on 87.
What have others done?
On July 8, plan on about 2 hours to get from Grant Village to Cody. Then 2-3 hours there. Have lunch, then drive on Buffalo or Gillette.
Either route will be a fun part of the trip. Check this link for photos of the highways. www.rockymountainroads.com/us-014_wy.html
It is about 5 hours from Cody to Sundance. Don%26#39;t know the best route because we have only been from Devil%26#39;s Tower to Sheridan, Billings, YNP then to Cody. I am sure others who have done that route can post.
