Yellowstone to San Fransisco by car or fly

We will visit from UK to USA. I need some ideas what to do and where to stay half way point.

We fly to LA rent a car and drive to Grsnd Canyon and would like to stop half way point - not Las Vegas than drive to Grand Canyon south rim, here we will stay 2 nights and allready have hotel in Grand Canyon. After Grand Canyon we will drive to Yellowstone park and looking to stop half way and than drice to Yellowstone. We have 2 nights at yellowstone park. After yellowstone i do not know weather to drive or fly to San Fransisco as i was told it take 2/3 days to drive. Tha we have 3 nights in San frasisco and than drive to LA via coastal route. Any advice on this trip will be appreciated

Hi LondonNash and welcome to the forum. Maybe also put this question on the Roadtrip forum or at the stateforums.

Driving from LA to Grand Canyon NP you won%26#39;t drive via Las Vegas because that%26#39;s a detour. The direct drive LA-Kingman-Williams-GC app. is 8-9 hours. If you want to make it a 2 days drive I suggest you stay for the night in Kingman. On your way to Kingman you could drive a part of the old R66 stretch (locally called National Trails hw. via Amboy in Ca. Next day towards GC you could take another part of R66 via Hackberry and Seligman. With 2 nights at the rim you%26#39;ll have the time to take in some classic routes.

I hope you realize you are passing some fantastic NP%26#39;s like Bryce Canyon NP and Zion NP on your way to Yellowstone. You can do it in 2 long days via Salt Lake City (Grand Canyon-us89-Page-Panguitch-20-I15) but if you have never been to Page, Zion and Bryce before I strongly would rethink this route. From SLC it%26#39;s 5 hours to West Yellowstone at the west entrance of Yellowstone NP but only 2 nights will be far from enough to see this majestic NP. 3 Days is a bare minimum to visit. You easily can spend a full day for upper and lower loop and you are missing Grand Teton NP altogether, also a NP that%26#39;should not be missed.

It%26#39;s at least 2 days driving between West Yellowstone and San Francisco so flying will safe a time but drop off charges of the rental car will bring costs and the flights prob won%26#39;t be cheap. If this were my trip I%26#39;d skip Yellowstone, come back and see it properly, and spend time for the Utah NP%26#39;s and drive to SF via Las Vegas-Death Valley NP-Tioga Pass and Yosemite NP.

A lot of driving for how long??? We did the GC, YNP and GT trip in 2007 but flew into Las Vegas and out of SLC. I would possibly tour Yosemite and Sequoia NP in California, GC and some of the parks in Utah before I headed to San Francisco. YNP takes more than 2 days and it is beautiful but you have a lot of driving and little time to see the scenery and wildlife that Yellowstone deserves.

Hi We have 11 days of travel and site seeing and 3 nights LA abd 7 nights Hawaii big island

So far i have booked my flights to LA and two nights hotel at Grand Canyon and 2 nights at yellowstone

my idea was 1st night half way to grand canyon, than 2 nights at grand canyon. next stop half way to yellowstone than 2 nights at yellow stone

2 days drive to SF and stay 3 nights SF than drive to LA

We have total of 22 nights in total before return to UK

In that case, I%26#39;d recommend hwy 40 in Barstow (the route Tet mentioned), but I%26#39;d leave LA very early and make it a one day drive to GC.

From GC, head east to US 89. Your options are to stay on 89 through Page or take the 89A route past Vermillion Cliffs and Jacob Lake. Past Kanab, take Hwy 9 west through Zion NP. Follow the signs to I15.

It%26#39;s a 9 1/2 hour drive from St. George to Yellowstone via West Yellowstone ... but the route is easy (I15 to US20 into West Yellowstone).

See if you can get a flight from Jackson or SLC back to SF (a LONG 2 day drive). You%26#39;re talking at least 17 hours drive time. Either way, you%26#39;d be able to drive through Grand Teton if you leave out the south entrance/exit.

Where are you staying in Yellowstone? We can help you with an itinerary with that information. Two and a half days is rather short for visiting Yellowstone.

I am now planing not to go san fransisco

we have booked 2 nights at old faithful hotel

I have 11 nights and would like to visit Grand Canyon and Yellowstone and any other ideas which you think i should consider

We have to start our trip at LA airport at about 2pm on day of arrival and we have to return to LA after 11 nights

regards

Hi Tet,

I have now decided not to go to San fransisco so it gives me extra six days

i have to see grand canyon and yellowstone

any other suggestion

regards

Hi

You said you start your trip 2 pm from LAX. So you take one night in between. Don%26#39;t do it if you directly come from the UK. You%26#39;ll be jetlagged, it takes time (count on at least 2 hours) to go through customs and p/u rental car. You%26#39;ll be very tired. Safety first, stay first night in LA, or drive a short distance in the GC direction. Next morning you%26#39;ll be up early I can assure you.....

So maybe:

Day 1: Arrive Los Angeles stay in the neighborhood.

Day 2: Long drive to Grand canyon NP.

Day 3: GCNP

Day 4: Better short than not at all. Drive from GCNP to Bryce Canyon NP. Stay night near Bryce

Day 5: The very long drive from Bryce to Yellowstone NP.

Day 6: Yellowstone NP

Day 7: Yellowstone NP. Really, add at least one night to Yellowstone. You%26#39;ll see!

Day 8: Leave Yellowstone NP and visit Grand Teton NP. Stay Jackson

Day 9: The very long drive from Jackson via Salt Lake City to Zion NP.

Day 10: Visit to Zion

Day 11: Drive from Zion to Los Angeles (yes, long).

Day 12: Home.

Can%26#39;t think of anything better in this timeframe.

Tet
