Biking in Grand Teton or Yellowstone National Park

What are peoples impression of biking in GTNP or YNP. We have a group of about 18 of us who will be out in the area. We are looking to be away from traffic, maybe off road with mountain bikes. What is it like in park? If we went outside of the park are there any good areas?

At least in Yellowstone, you are not allowed to go off road. See this page from the National Park Service website: www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/yoursafety.htm

The same is true in GTNP. See this page from the NPS:

Sorry to put a damper on your plans.

Sorry I should have said however that there are designated bike routes in both parks. Follow the links in the above post to the applicable pages for more info.

I haven%26#39;t biked in the area, so I can%26#39;t give specific advice about where to go, but I just want to add a point about bison - I have seen some very nervous, unhappy folks (with bikes or motorcycles) stuck in bison traffic jams without the ';protection'; of their car. If you are going in the early season, this seems to be less of a problem, but just make sure everyone in the group is comfortable with that. There are couple of tour operators that do come through with groups on bikes (suck as Backroads) so it can be done. There are not large shoulders in most places, so if their are trails, you may prefer riding on them.

And as the website points out, the roads are not wide. There is a lot of traffic, driven by sightseeers who might pull over at any moment, with little if any warning. Not the safest biking area.
