Birdwatching

Hi! I wanted to know which Field Guide you would recommend me to buy and where to buy it.

If possible I%26#39;d want one which isn%26#39;t restricted to Yellowstone, as I%26#39;ll me traveling along a large part of the west coast and I%26#39;d like to watch birds there too.But please do tell me if there%26#39;s a good Yellowstone%26#39;s bird guide I should buy

thanks!

Birdwatching

You probably did this, but I Googled ';Birds of Yellowstone'; and found a long list of resources.

Because we do not want a collection of very specific birding guides, except for a variety of guide types for WA and OR, we tend to use:

…nationalgeographic.com/product/…

Here%26#39;s an Inside Page that you probably don%26#39;t need re: optics, but might be useful in terms of wildlife watching.

When will you be in YNP?

Birdwatching

Thanks for the links! They were very useful. I%26#39;ll be visiting the park in two weeks ^^ though I%26#39;m leaving today to the US. I hope I find a good bookstore where to buy the guide!

Make sure you buy a bird guide that is for Western US birds. Many times they have different books for east and west.

Book stores in Yellowstone will have the guides as well as most book stores in larger cities. Not sure where you are flying into, but look for these large book stores: Borders and Barnes %26amp; Noble.

Have a great trip!

I have the book that voyaging recommended (the western region edition) and it%26#39;s excellent. I also use ';Peterson%26#39;s Field Guide to Western Birds';. It%26#39;s a little smaller and easier for me to slip in a fanny pack when we%26#39;re out.

I would go to this website and print out this ';Field Checklist of the Birds of Yellowstone National Park.'; It%26#39;s a fun checklist.

Last spring, we were lucky enough to spot and photograph a ';turkey vulture'; along the Gibbon River. It was fun to spot something not on the list.

Also, if you are in West Yellowstone, MT stop by the Visitor%26#39;s Center for a great brochure about birding in the area. It has hikes and birding opportunities along Hebgen and Quake Lakes.

I%26#39;ll second the recommendation of the Sibley%26#39;s guide to Western Birds. Birding is my main goal when visiting Yellowstone. One year the guide was using that guide, and we were so impressed, we bought one when we got home. A couple tips-we saw Barrow%26#39;s goldeneye on Lake Yellowstone, and Black-billed Magpies at Mammoth Hot Springs (common, I know, but not where we live).

The photo next to my name is a White Pelican, one of many found at Le Hardie Rapids in YNP. We saw Harlequin Ducks there as well, nesting, before they returned to the coast.

We actually bought the Sibley guide for the area at the gift shop at the Ranger Station/Interpretation Center in the Grand Tetons when we first arrived. My guess is that they will also sell it at the shops in YNP.
